Database Demonstration Notes

Lankester Designs specialises in producing websites for the smaller business and recently we have received a number of enquiries, from just such businesses, regarding product catalogues.

Because of the business size and the limited number of products involved, there is no requirement for a large or expensive server side database. The requests are simply for an online catalogue that visitors to a website can either search, or browse through, and then e-mail for more information on selected items.

We decided to respond to this need, by producing a client side 'database'. This is incorporated directly into the HTML documents and accessed via a form, bringing the data to the visitor's local drive. One huge benefit of using this method to access data, is that it greatly increases the data processing speed. So, for a small product catalogue it is an ideal solution.

The Demonstration

In the main page is a demonstration of the three features available using the client side 'database'. We have used a catalogue of pens in our example.

These features are: -
1. browsing the entire catalogue
2. searching for a specific item
3. transferring selected criteria to an e-mail form, in order to obtain more information.

All three features are packaged together in our CSDB solution, but if only one or two of the features are required, we are happy to oblige.

If you have a small product catalogue and don't want to pay a high price for a large server side database, then this would be an ideal way of giving visitors access to your products.
